tinyjo: (down in the dumps)
1) Due to the appalling lack of visibility in the rain last night, I managed to hit the metal post between my and my neighbours share of the drive while backing in last night. Dent and a rip in the bumper are the result. Anyone know (a) if I need to get that fixed and (b) if so, how much it'll cost?

2) My parcel with my materials for the French course I decided on in the end hasn't arrived yet. According to the DSL web tracking it was out for delivery yesterday but the last entry (at around 8pm yesterday) is "No parcel but data". What does that even mean? I've emailed them to find out but no progress so far.

Why is it that I can't find a decent web calender that supports syncML so that I can sync it with my phone? Even Google doesn't - I have to go through a 3rd party thingie to make it work. And ditto webmail clients I can set up on my windows hosting.

Finally uploaded the most recent batch of photos to my Flickr account - the Archie/Ellen wedding pics (appropriately tagged), a couple of bird pics and a couple of spider pics. We had another really good spider season in our garden this year, with some moster webs. Although I'm not keen on spiders in the house at all, I'm perfectly happy to have them in the garden and even quite soft hearted towards them, trying my level best not to destroy their webs, which can be quite spectacular.

Anyway, uploading the pics has reminded me that I still haven't found a photo service I really like. Flickr's got a lot going for it and I really like the fact that you can combine your photos tagged x with everyone elses photos tagged x (a feature which SB lacks and I'd really like to see!) and also has the most recent first style of display, which I really like. On the minus side though, you can't control at all the way your photos are displayed in Flickr, which really really annoys me and you're not allowed to use them on other sites without linking back to your Flickr. I'm not sure quite why I find that so irritating but I do - I guess I'm quite happy to give credit where appropriate but I don't like being told I have to every time and quite often if I'm using a photo as an illustration I don't want people to wander off to my flickr, I want them to concentrate on the post.

Scrapbook, on the other hand, has basically opposite problems. By default it does earliest first displays in galleries and there's no way to have a page of most recent photos uploaded to where-ever. Tagging is limited to your own Scrapbook and gets mixed up with galleries (where Flickr keeps sets and tags cleanly separated). But, it does give you very full control over the layout of your pages and doesn't have any restrictions about where or how you use your pictures. And of course for me the security is easier because I know/keep in touch with many more people via LJ (in fact, I don't use any of the social aspects of Flickr at all).

I have a feeling that if I thought really hard about it I could write a combination style and uploader programme which would make Scrapbook behave like Flickr except for the aggregating everyone's tags thing. Which is very tempting but it'd be a lot of work and I'd have to think about it really very carefully before I started. I just wish there was something out there that combined the best of both but I assume if there was, I'd have heard of it by now :(

I hate this building. I want to watch the rain but all I can see is my face, reflected.
