OK, I've decided, since the Oxford monopoly is a bit crap in my opinion to make my own Oxford University monopoly. Yes - you too can charge huge rents for living in St Johns :) I've decided on colleges for streets (duh), and libraries for stations. Here is my first suggestion for layout - what do you reckon?

Maybe the "Chance" squares could be "Bab Van"

1) Spell the colleges correctly!

2) Ditch the Hooke library (it's a lending library, not quite the same as the others), split the Bod into the Old and New Bod.

3) Free parking, jail and Go should be relabelled, but I'm not sure as what. Hall food, lectures (Go to lectures, go directly to lectures, do not pass Go, do not collect student loan), student loan?

1) I'll make more effort when I do it properly :)

2) Fair enough - the Hooke was a bit of a random choice really cos I ran out of librarys at 3. I didn't know the Bod was split though.

3) Hmmm. Not a bad idea actually. I hadn't thought of renaming the non property squares but that could be quite fun too...

I have a theory that this si something that'll be easier to edit in SVG than GIF, since you want to be able to change the text around... Therefore I have knocked together the beginnings of an SVG ‘Oxopoly’ board (http://www.alleged.org.uk/pdc/2002/oxopoly/).

Neat :) Your's looks like an actual board, as opposed to my screen grab from excel!

The Turf and the Bird and Baby would be better placed as the utilities.

I hadn't thought of using pubs (probably cos they're not part of the university proper). I think I see them more as stations though - maybe the Turf, Angel and Greyhound, Eagle and Child, the Bear? And then you could have just the Bodlian and the Radcliffe libraries as the utilities.

Other possibilities....

Other possibilities for four things: the four parish churches, the four park & ride stations.

For the utilities, there's also the possibility of G&D's and Peppers :-)

Oh, and 'Free Parking'?

In Oxford?

Free Parking? In Oxford?

How about ‘no lectures’?

Norrington table

Dear Jo

This link is the reference for a good but controversial classification of Oxford's Colleges. This may be the one you may want to use!
http://www.9cp.co.uk/norrington-table.htm
There is also a table of Colleges' wealth somewhere (don't remember). Hope this helps.

I did use it for a reference but didn't want to stick to it too closely. Thanks though.

I think you misspelled Bodleieaiean

Date: May 22nd, 2002 10:45 am (UTC)From: (Anonymous)
The Bodleian Library is spelled with many vowels (Bodley − y + ian).

Also:

  • St Peter’s (apostrophe—and similarly for the other saints’ colleges)

  • St Edmund Hall (no ’s)

  • Brasenose

  • Keble

  • [The] Queens’ [College] (not ’s)

  • Balliol

  • Magdalen

While we’re being pedantic about spelling, the OUP house style uses St (without a full stop) for Saint, reserving St. for ‘Street’.

Ooh! Oooh!

[The] Queens’ [College] (not ’s)
Actually it is The Queen's College - it's a specific queen in question. Matilda or somesuch. Nope, I've forgotten. Cambridge has to make do with more than one queen rather than solitary splendour...

Congrats on the board work, anyway!

Oh well, I had to get one of them wrong, and it figures it would be Queen’s afte I’d started making a fuss about apostrophes... :-)

What you should be buying is roads, on which you can build three halls of residence (pubs if you're on Cowley Road/Walton St) and then you can build a College (or club if you're on Cowley Road/Walton St) ... all this selling *buildings*, that's not really in the spirit of monopoly, is it? I've already mentioned the brown streets, the dark blue ones should probably be Banbury Road and Woodstock Road, Broad Street, The High and St Aldates for dark green, Beaumont Street, New Road and New in Hall Street for yellow, red should be science area (Parks Road, Norham Gardens and Keble Road?) ... bordering the University parks for free parking. and so on. Station, Park and Ride, Oxford Tube, Oxford Airport. Ashmolean and Bodleian for the utilities ... jail becomes the college library, just visiting is flirting in the stacks. Oh!the tokens. A punt, a mortarboard, a bowler hat, a bicycle, a duck and a pimms bottle. And the colleges should all be based on the Radcliffe Camera and the halls on Tom Tower. Just a passing thought :)
