Decided I owed it to Mike (my direct boss) to tell him that I was planning to leave. I explained that I found the commute too much and he said that he understood and it was a shame about the working from home thing (upper management eh?). I felt really nervous about doing it but decided that I trusted him not to do anything mean and it'll help him with his planning and so on. Feel better now.
