Now this looks like my kind of film. Definitely going to see that when it comes out.

We saw Lady in the Water this week, by the way, which was AWFUL! Slow, incredibly didactic and with a batshit crazy plot. It played like it was trying to be a sort of creepy horror film, but if you persist in poking at the 4th wall in that kind of thing it just doesn't work. It has to be imersive and this so wasn't. Also, if M. Night is going to make up his own fairy tales he should get a lot better at naming his mythical creatures.

/Sondheim-fan hat on

I am not convinced by the casting - though I will happily be disabused of the notion - and perhaps I'm spoiled by having seen the Covent Garden production a couple of years ago starring Thomas Allen, the opera singer. However, I think Burton ought to have fun with the setting, and wild horses are not going to stop me from seeing this film. I wonder who they'll get to play Mrs. Lovett? Now that is a stage part I covet with all my heart and soul.

I think I must dig out my cast recording of ST and listen to it again. Sondheim does absolutely chilling things with the chorus lines. And the mad woman's songs are quite troubling too, as is the Judge's er, obsession with his ward. (actually, I wonder how they are going to do the stage directions for that song - he self-flagellates, and then there is a SD which reads "he climaxes"....)

Wow - I hadn't realised the SDs were quite that raunchy! I have to say there are no Mrs. Lovett possibilities springing to mind really. Who would you cast as a film Todd, given the choice?

That's a toughie; see, to my mind Depp looks a bit too young and svelte. After all, Todd's been transported for something like 15-20 years, and has generally been very weathered &c - by the time he returns, Johanna his daugher is c. 18yo. And can Depp sing such an operatic role, I ask myself? I have no idea. I think Mandy Patinkin might do it very well - he's excellent in "Sunday in the Park with George" in the title role, and can sing... My head has still got Thomas Allen in it as Todd, however. I shall have to think on.

Utterly unrelated -- did you get your book back? I left it with Jo a couple of weekends ago.

Hasn't quite made it back to me yet, due to Jo being rushed on her way out last time and missing picking it up - but I know it's there :-) (I've a place marker for where I need the quote from it Jo, so not to worry) Thank you for bringing it to Oxfordshire :-D

No - I failed to take it to the girly night :( Will be trying again in the near future.

Not a terribly big fan of M. Night Sh-whatever, but maybe it's because I don't care for the genre in general.

He started off well - I loved 6th Sense - but he seems to be going down hill at an increasing rate. I think I'm going to be avoiding him from now on :(

I must admit, I did like 6th Sense, but overall I don't really like the genre. I'm very picky about horror/terror flicks. :P
