Went to see V for Vendetta last week and really really like it. I must go back and read some of the reviews, which I've heard were pretty bad to see what they objected to - I thought it was a really strong film. Highly recommended. Was discussing it in the pub, with Alex and Archie I think and someone asked whether it would fall under the heading of glorifying terrorism. What do you think?

Also, next week, tapas, Weds, in the tapas place in the new bit by the castle. What time do we want to meet up? And where - are we going to rendezvous somewhere beforehand?

Edit Plan is to meet up at Bar Ha Ha as close to 5 as possible and then head on to the tapas place between 5:30 & 6pm. OK?

Our weekly movie review show (which I don't watch often, but happened to last week) was fairly negative toward V for Vendetta. Though I can't really remember why, to be honest. I think they may have said there was too much gratuitious violence. They also commented on the controversy of "glorifying" terrorism, though they seemed fairly supportive of it, as it was a new and fresh way of looking at things. (Obviously they weren't supportive of glorifying terrorism, and I can't say whether the movie does or not -- I haven't seen it -- but yeah.)

I can't be bothered to redo the html here, but there's a bunch linked from here. (There will also be a review at Strange Horizons on Tuesday.)

I quite liked the film too!

re: Glorifying terrorism - a bit, I suppose, but is slightly nonsensical. The whole treatise about symbols and attacking symbols is one that pro-'GWOT' folks would actually agree. Also, a key point about V that is difficult to transcribe to today's political situation is this: his was a personal vendetta against those who directly injured him - and it was clear that it was they, not he, who acted first (and they essentially agree with this point by their attempts to hide the Lark Hill history).

One issue worth arguing about: his low/non-existant innocent collateral deathcount - that could qualify as glorifying his brand of terrorism.

yeah: this is definitely one film with a stark contrast between how much the reviews have liked it & how much my flist have (pretty unanimously) liked it . . .

K, I have to be on the 9pm bus from the City centre --> home, else I am stranded completely. I finish work at 5.30. Am happy to rendezvous somewhere beforehand. Let me know.

Please, please, please do not let me have wine. At all, preferably, but certainly not more than one glass. I think I am allergic, and I keep forgetting this!

[livejournal.com profile] bradhicks had a good take on it. The character isn't so much glorifying terrorism as using it to prove a point. The government has said, basically, "give up your rights and we'll make sure terrorism will go away". So V says, "I'm going to perform this terrorist act and you all have a year of warning to prepare and stop me." And if he pulls it off, the government's promise is shown to be false; even after taking away civil rights, they can't manage to stop terrorism. Which means that they were unjustified in doing so, and lied to their people, and that those who were hauled away by jack-booted thugs to die in concentration camps died in vain.

(The book has a different take on it, of course. It's much more nuanced and interesting. Well, to me anyway.)

Well, I'm not particularly keen to stay late at work on my last-but-two day, so meeting up about fivish would get my vote. Do you want to meet elsewhere first, or just go straight to the tapas place? It would make sense to rendezvous somewhere in the castle development anyway, rather than trekking over to the other side of town and back. There's a bar there (Bar Ha Ha), we could meet there?

It's in the prison development, pretty much next door to the tapas place as I recall. There's an entrance on Castle Street as well.

Ah, good stuff. The CS took me down to the castle last week, so I know where it is. If I hear no different, meet y'all there when I get out from werk? People have my mobile if there's a problem, I spect...
