I've read the first few stories of Accelerando. I had similar reservations to you when the series was described to me; like you, I'm interested in stories about people, not stories about technology! But I found the Accelerando stories surprisingly enjoyable. Which doesn't necessarily mean you'll love them, but I think it's worth reading, at least the first story (which very much works as a standalone and is also short) and see if you can see what's amazing about it.
