Doesn't everyone's method of programming consist of thinking through your fingers and then refining the thought process using the bugs as a counter-argument? I always thought that was the way to do it. Otherwise you might as well use a batch model.
Think yourself lucky with it only taking a few hours. One of the PhD students at Cranfield used to have compute jobs that took a week or so to complete. When his results were gobbledygook (how the hell do you spell that?) because he have logical errors, he had a major logistical problem.
