In Germany, prices start at around 2.8 or 2.9 cents a minute (around 2.0 pence a minute) if you choose the right carrier (by dialling a prefix), so the maximum-length five-minute call wouldn't cost more than about 15 cents, or 10 pence. I don't consider that very expensive.
Are British telephone charges so much higher?
(Or perhaps the British long-distance/international telephone market isn't as deregulated/competitive/whatever-the-word-is as the German one?)
