Dazzling Social Whirl
January 24th, 2002 09:46 amWent to the theatre again last night - Copacabana at the Cochrane Theatre done by the NatWest Theatre Company of which my mate Suz is a member. It was actually much better than I expected. The mics were set a bit low to begin with but they soon sorted that out and the whole thing was pretty cool. It was particularly fun to watch the dancing and think "That really could be me up there". Plus I want Lolas red beaded dress :) The actual storyline reminded me of a cross between Bugsy Malone and something else - the first bit is pure Bugsy - and, in the way of musicals it was more like a modern fairytale than anything else. The setting and costumes were fantastic. They must have spent a fortune on dresses for the dancers alone - they seemed to have a different one for each dance! Also, special mention goes to the lady who played Conchita (the girlfriend of the baddy who helps Lola out) - apparently she stepped in at New Year when the previous girl had to drop out and she was fantastic - glam, gorgeous and with a great accent and singing voice :)
