I think the limit is 150 posts or 2 weeks, which ever is sooner. I think if you put higher values in you just get the last page again and again. As far as I know, it's a system wide setting unfortunatly. In the end, LJ is quite good as a primative quotes engine and I like the ease of posting using the client but it's not really designed for it - if I do my own, I can have much better searching and indexing of a quotes.
