OK - my next resolution is to improve my French from rubbishy school girl to something I could have a half way decent conversation in. I plan to accomplish this in several ways, a couple of which I need help with ([livejournal.com profile] dotty, this means you).

  1. I still vaguely remember what the grammar rules are supposed to be but my vocab is lamentable. So number 1 is a word a day website of some kind - any recommendations?
  2. I remember being told that "the more you listen the more you learn" so I plan to try and listen to an hour or so a day of French radio - preferably the french equivalent of radio 4 (i.e. all talking) - again, recommendations?
  3. I'll never learn if I don't use it so I've created a new journal - [livejournal.com profile] tinyjo_francais which I'm going to write in french in (I'll have to work out how you get accents and stuff in). I'm going to try and add something to it at least once a fortnight - anyone who speaks french please come and correct my spelling and stuff :)

And if you can think of any other things I can do, suggest below...

Ooooooh!

Dear Tinyjo

I am pleased to help there. I taught kids and adults up to PGCE level. Another point, I did teach my friend May, starting as a Live French experience (my prefered methodology), taking her to shops/cafes and giving an idea of words and so on. I was also supplying a bit of vocabulary for the day + mini-grammar (on one single page) that she would learn for the next session of live French. She was also recording me talking in French for the pronunciation with a voicerecorder. What's more, I taught her some rules about etiquette and manners in France (restaurants, cafes...) which DID help her when she went there. How about that? I am looking for things on the web for you like that you can have proper support and cultural things.

You're a star :)

I guess I ought to try and do a bit of "Live French" at the pub each week really!

Are you talking mostly about aural/oral French skills, or not only? Cos if it's reading as well, then you should combine comics and French to read --- French comics! Obviously there's Tintin and Asterix (especially useful if you know the story in English already) but also a very wide range of other stuff as you can imagine. Including fnac's BD range...

Well, I plan to write so I ought to read as well. I used to have a copy of Asterix et le cadeaux du Cesar - I wonder what happended to that.

There must be some French livejournals I can read...

J'ai beaucoup. Corto Maltese, peut-être? Camus? Baudelaire? Jaques Tardi? Heh. Mon française est affreux, je sais. Accents avec unicode character map (accessories) parce que je suis parasseuse. Or whatever the word for lazy is. Jenni will know all about accents far better than me!
