June 10th, 2002 12:28 pmIt seems to be an odd year in men’s tennis this year. First Tomas Johansen won the Australian Open and now Albert Costa wins the French. Agassi, Sampras, Hewitt, Guga - none of them quite seem to be able to hold it together at the Opens this year. Maybe we can expect some surprises at Wimbledon this year. Ivanisavic won't be there (shoulder op) and even if Costa were there I don't see him doing it on grass but maybe Roddick or Federer? Who knows - Henman might even get somewhere (he's currently ranked 6 in the world). At least all seems normal in the women’s game although it'll be a shame if Hingis has to retire - I predict another all Williams final with Venus just edging in this time.
I was glad to see Costa win it though because he's a good guy. In his semi with Corretja they were playing for a vital point in the fourth set - if Costa won it it would be match point to him, if Corretja won it it would have been break point to him. Corretja hit a very long shot which Costa couldn't reach. The line judge called it out. Before the umpire could even think about getting out of the chair to examine the mark (on clay courts you can see where the ball landed normally) Costa overruled, pointing to the mark. It might have been overruled anyway but it might not have been. He went on to win the match (obviously) and it's nice to see a good guy getting rewarded.
