Although I'm willing to talk about my beliefs I'm cautious about doing so as there are some very aggressive atheists in our peer group and I don't think getting into an argument with someone who's not really interested in respecting my beliefs is very helpful to anyone plus it make me and, I assume, onlookers uncomfortable.
I recognise this. It's how I tend to feel about some of my environmental beliefs, particularly about issues such as GM crops. There's no point bringing these things up if it's just going to lead to disagreements and discomfort.
So I tend not to bring it up unless asked directly and tend to ignore the occasional intolerant comment passed, assuming the speaker has forgotten my beliefs.
Just wanted to say that I hope I've never said anything that made you feel that I had anything less than the utmost respect for your religious beliefs, and if I ever have, then sorry for that.
When I started studying theology, somewhat to my surprise, I met a load of highly intelligent, reasonable, articulate people, all of whom had strongly held religious beliefs that were just as rational and as well thought out as anything I believed myself. I also studied some fascinating and attractive religious ideas; they just weren't ideas I ever found myself relating to, particularly. I like to think that all this helped me to have a greater respect for religion, and for people who hold religious beliefs in good faith, but if I didn't always show it, then I'm sorry. :)
