Also re living abroad and the difficulty of finding friends -- it is indeed difficult and it's hard to appreciate what it's actually like until you've done it (I suppose I was surprised at how hard it is, given that I've lived abroad as a child and so forth). That said, it's not something to avoid because of that. Just getting to know a place like Madrid, for instance, is worth it in itself; and I've made some good friends as a result, that I go back and see. The same is true for the US, though less so.
I think the thing that really impressed me on my return from Spain was the fact that yes, I did it, I survived it, I even enjoyed it -- it proved to me the strength and adaptability that lurks within all (most?) of us. And that charge, that buzz, was a great thing in itself to get.
