Migration

Have spent a surprising amount of time messing around this afternoon trying to decide why I don't just suck it up and pay for Flickr. In the end, I narrowed it down to a few things:

1) The link back policy. I find this annoying. Sometimes I want to use pictures in a purely illustrative fashion and don't want them to be a pointer off to elsewhere. I have a feeling I shouldn't be so precious about this but it's annoying.

2) I get that free users are a drain on resources, but surely by adding more sets, I wouldn't using any more resources than I already am, right? I get the bandwidth cap and I'm fine with it but the sets one is annoying.

3) Lack of customizability. Not a biggie (and something surprisingly few places have, as well) but I'd like to be able to lay out my page as I want it.

On the other hand, I do like the last-to-first aspect of it. And the uploader - last time I tried it it wasn't up to much but now it's pretty full featured and does all the things I used to wish it would do. If only ScrapBook was capable of doing last-to-first, I'd switch over and use that but no such luck. Within a page, yes, but over a whole album, no, not so much. V annoying.

Hmm. Actually, I might be able to fake it after all. This requires some consideration. I wouldn't have the commenting, etc but on the other hand, I never use that on Flickr anyway - I've never really engaged with the Flickr community. I guess I'm just not into my picture taking enough. Hmm. Thoughtful thoughts must ensue. Because I need a new LJ project, oh yes I do.

Finally uploaded the most recent batch of photos to my Flickr account - the Archie/Ellen wedding pics (appropriately tagged), a couple of bird pics and a couple of spider pics. We had another really good spider season in our garden this year, with some moster webs. Although I'm not keen on spiders in the house at all, I'm perfectly happy to have them in the garden and even quite soft hearted towards them, trying my level best not to destroy their webs, which can be quite spectacular.

Anyway, uploading the pics has reminded me that I still haven't found a photo service I really like. Flickr's got a lot going for it and I really like the fact that you can combine your photos tagged x with everyone elses photos tagged x (a feature which SB lacks and I'd really like to see!) and also has the most recent first style of display, which I really like. On the minus side though, you can't control at all the way your photos are displayed in Flickr, which really really annoys me and you're not allowed to use them on other sites without linking back to your Flickr. I'm not sure quite why I find that so irritating but I do - I guess I'm quite happy to give credit where appropriate but I don't like being told I have to every time and quite often if I'm using a photo as an illustration I don't want people to wander off to my flickr, I want them to concentrate on the post.

Scrapbook, on the other hand, has basically opposite problems. By default it does earliest first displays in galleries and there's no way to have a page of most recent photos uploaded to where-ever. Tagging is limited to your own Scrapbook and gets mixed up with galleries (where Flickr keeps sets and tags cleanly separated). But, it does give you very full control over the layout of your pages and doesn't have any restrictions about where or how you use your pictures. And of course for me the security is easier because I know/keep in touch with many more people via LJ (in fact, I don't use any of the social aspects of Flickr at all).

I have a feeling that if I thought really hard about it I could write a combination style and uploader programme which would make Scrapbook behave like Flickr except for the aggregating everyone's tags thing. Which is very tempting but it'd be a lot of work and I'd have to think about it really very carefully before I started. I just wish there was something out there that combined the best of both but I assume if there was, I'd have heard of it by now :(

So, photos from Blickling are now up on Flickr. I forgot to mention that I also took some rather cunning photos. In the resturant/tearoom, we found a booklet explaining their plans to use local food, where possible off the estate and containing quite a collection of the recipies you could expect there. Unfortunatly, this was marked not to be removed and there was only one so I went through carefully and photographed all of the recipies! They've all come out well enough to read and I'll have to get round to transcribing them now but I presume they're probably someone's copyright so I haven't published them for public use :)
