Which well known novel was this new tech/service inspired by? Honest, it's easy. I'm definitely going to have to check it out when I've got broadband.

I get a not found error when I click on that link...

it was a friends only post...

Oops! I didn't notice that. Sorry!

That's because I missed off the l when I copy/pasted the URL out of my browser. But, as it was FO anyway, I've changed it to link directly to the site of the company.

Have you seen the "Lose Yourself In There" fan video at http://users.snowcrest.net/fox/there/miraclepictures/index.html ? Quite amazing what you can do with this app.

Here's Tarah hanging out (http://soulsong.hn.org/tess/pics/There/Tarah1.jpg) in Herve's house in the southeast of Ootay island - what you can't hear is the live streamed music from the hifi in the corner of the room... and here she is on her new shiny hoverboard (http://soulsong.hn.org/tess/pics/There/Tarah2.jpg) which she keeps falling off...

well, that's the best-drawn one of them I've seen so far

... but hardly a new idea. We were doing this back in the early 90s, you know -- via telnet, with text.

I built the world's funkiest tree-house, and Damian made an entire valley full of talking cats.

Yeah! I still judge all comers against Cheeseplant's House (http://www.cheeseplant.org/~daniel/pages/cph.html) from 1991!

Cheeseplant's House, rings some bells -- think I remember hearing about that, vaguely.

I liked the total possibility aspect of operating purely in text -- confined only by imagination. When I last started looking at the graphical ones a few years back, it all seemed a clip-artish, not much potential to be anything other than a gabbling smiley-face.

This one looks like the creative possibilities are coming back in again, may be worth checking out (though I'm not sure I have time!)

It's not the only one out there. is the one I've heard about. Partially due to the tax revolt they had. It's got an embedded journalist, which is pretty neat when the terrorists start taking hostages.

I can see I'm going to have to make my post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/soulsong/205451.html) on the subject public.

There is definitely not the first, but There is the only virtual world I've found that's slick enough to actually be worth hanging around in.

Also, I'm trying to ignore your dancing badger icon badger badger badger badger badger badger mushroom mushroom...argh! get out, get out of my head!!!

Thanks for that. Interesting reading and I'd love to badger you with questions about it, bit it's all a rather theoretical interest for me until they release an OS X client or I get a new monitor for my old PC.

In very long comment threads, it gets very disturbing I'm told. (Mwahaha)

*laughs* I can see that! Okay, shutting up now.

kind of like a dancing Jesus page, only more strung out?

[identity profile] soulsong.livejournal.com 2003-10-17 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
ps I played SecondLife for a couple of hours. It was *painful*. Slow, ugly, awful interface, no helpful people to show me around... in fact I only saw one person the whole time I was there. Contrast to There where I end up in fascinating conversations everywhere I go even when I'm trying desperately to do work and ignore the place.

I could say "your mileage may vary" but really, in this case, no, it won't :p
