How to get a seat to yourself on the bus

1) Go to sleep. The British, bless 'em, will generally fill up all the other seats before waking you up. You can help this by spreading yourself across the seats as much as possible and affect not to hear the first 'excuse me' - wait til they tap your arm.

2) Talk on the phone. You don't even have to be loud but look out of the window so that they can't make eye contact

3) Listen to a stereo. Preferably loud, but not essential. Most effective if you shut your eyes, giving the impression of being lost in the music.

Addendum to point 1: If they actually wake you up and sit next to you, make sure they never do it again by falling asleep again with your head on their shoulder, and drooling.

:) I'm not quite that bad, but I don't make any space concessions - which they don't complain about cos I've gone back to sleep. I've never been sat next to by the same person twice
