Well, we've done it. We've alphabetized the fiction collection. As this involved a lot of going up and down stairs with piles of books, I am now wiped out, but that's OK. There is also an actual increase in clutter because the extracted non-fiction and multiple author stuff is all higgledy-piggledy on the bed in the spare room. I'm saving that for next weekend :)

Still, it is rather satisfying to look at Eco next to Eddings and think "Yes, that's exactly right" :P

So how will you arrange your non-fiction? The whole lot alphabetically, or categorised into genre? And how many genres...?

You could of course catalogue them onto LibraryThing (http://www.librarything.com/)...

Hahahahah! You're totally a junior librarian. :)

I did that six years ago, and it's the best thing I could have done. Far easier to add to to an alphabetized library than to have all these new books and try to do it now!

you alphabetized? cool!

I haven't decided that yet. Really, I should use the Dewey decimal system, I suppose :)

Heh, I actually was, once! I was a volunteer librarian in my free periods during 6th form (last 2 years of school before university). Mostly because it meant you got to sit and drink tea in the library office but shelving was also a soothing afternoon pursuit :)

That looks like way too much effort for me!

Yeah, it was a bit of a mammouth task for us. I used to have mine alphabetized but then Alex and I moved in together, he retrieved all the books from storage with his parents and we moved house, leaving it totally messed up. We managed to come up with a big pile of duplicates for the charity bookshop Alex volunteers for though (we had nearly a double Pratchett!).
