Comments screening

Now, I didn't mind the Passion spam too much. Sure, it was annoying, but at least it wasn't obscene. This morning however I received 3 spam comments advertising Indian porn (all to older entries too - if I didn't have comments emailing on I might well not have spotted them). That's the sort of thing that I don't want to have on here even for a moment so I've now turned on screening for anonymous comments. The intention for this is *only* to block spam. Anonymous comments are still welcome and I'll unscreen all the legit ones ASAP. I can't wait until the authentication patch is finally done and people will be able to leave email addresses etc for anon comments.

Is that a measure to prevent spam comments or was it something they were considering anyway?

It's not particularly aimed at spam comments I think, but at the fact that people wanted a way for non-LJ users to be able to leave "signed" comments - they'll be authenticated by an email sent to the address that is given for the comment (only needs to be done once).

The handy side effect of this is that I'll be able to turn off anonymous commenting because I feel that anyone legit should be happy to leave an email address (I don't think it will necessarily be displayed - just authenticated). Spammers won't be able to use this interface even if they can figure out how to auto-authenticate because you can ban an email and they can't use fake ones because they won't authenticate.

Sounds great!
