I tried to alter the partitions using partition magic and it failed 1/3 of the way through and now the computer fails to start windows. So I tried to restore from my drive image backup only to discover that there was a fault in it so I couldn't see it from the restore utility.

Yuck, that's nasty. I think you've just reinforced my fear of repartitioning anything that's got a copy of windows lurking on it.
