Busy, busy

I submitted my tax return yesterday. I've no idea why they're still asking me for them but doing it on the internet is so easy that I can't be bothered to argue. It took me 30 mins and I owe the Inland Revenue 88 pence aparently. Hurrah.

I was quite pleased with myself last night because when Alex went out I resisted the lure of another glass of wine and Neverwinter Nights and instead actually did the house tidying that I didn't have time to do at the weekend. I also pranced around with loud music on my headphones from my iRiver, but hey, it's exercise, right?

I got sent a tax return thing to do, and the book was really thick. I've never done one before, so I got scared, and hit it under a pile of stuff beside my scanner.

I turns out that if all your income comes from working then you just copy your P60 into the employment form and tick No at the top of all of the other pages and then you're done. And then they say, "Yes, your PAYE was right all a long except for this piddling amount of pence."

I'm confused. Is this something I should be doing as a matter of course, or is it something I do if they send me a letter telling me I need to do it?

If you're earning top rate of tax then you should be doing it. If you're getting income from a second home, forign investments or other rich person type things then you should be doing it. Possibly if you're forign you should be. Otherwise, and probably in your case, no you don't have to self-assess.

If for some reason they think that you should, then they'll send you a form. I don't actually qualify but for a brief period at DrKW my salary and bonus pushed me into top rate tax and now they're convinced that I need to even though I don't.

Also if you do any freelancey type of work for which you get paid - this includes payments you might receive from people/companies where they will be putting it through their accounts/tax return.

Which is why I have to fill one in. But you're right, it's no real hardship - certainly nothing to get scared about.

Thank you - that's pretty reassuring. The scary thing is the amount of paper. I might confuse them a bit though, because I still have a house in NZ and people rent it, and that rent is paying the mortgage there.
