I was listening to the radio last night and the discussion was mostly on Japan but it mentioned in passing the fact that China manufactures so much of everything these days. And then there was talk of fatalities in Chinese coal mines because they need so much to keep up with their industrial expansion. And I thought "Well, I guess owning the means of production is communist, right?"

jinty, was it you who asked about this? Anyway, of possibly general interest is that you can now append ?view=flat to comments pages to view the comments in order added rather than threaded. I don't know how that interacts with multiple pages, but there you have it.

Dear BBC News Online

Do not put "Service Unavailable" on your website! Ever! I had to dash over to my desk and get my radio to make sure that I wasn't missing something terrible happening and I can feel my heart rate is slightly elevated even now I'm listening to PM talking about the Discovery landing.
